You can buy almost everything a baby needs in Japan, and the quality is excellent — so travel light and restock as you go. Here’s what’s easy to find and the few things worth bringing.
Nappies and wipes
Widely sold at drugstores, supermarkets and convenience stores. Sizing runs a little differently, so buy a small pack first to check the fit, then stock up. Pull-up styles for older babies and toddlers are common too.
Formula and baby food
Formula (including powder sticks and, increasingly, ready-to-feed and liquid options) is sold at drugstores and baby stores. Jarred and pouch baby food is available in supermarkets and baby shops. Brands and flavours differ from home, so if your baby is particular, carry a little of the familiar to bridge the change.

- Drugstores (Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Welcia and similar) for nappies, formula and toiletries.
- Baby specialty stores (such as Akachan Honpo and Babies R Us) for a full range, including gear.
- Supermarkets for baby food and snacks; convenience stores for quick top-ups.
Worth bringing from home
- Any specific formula your baby won’t switch from (bring enough, or transition before you travel).
- Prescribed medication and a familiar teething or comfort item.
