Tsukiji Outer Market

築地場外市場

Tsukiji · near Tsukiji Station (Metro) / Tsukijishijo Station (Toei Oedo)

Despite the wholesale inner market moving to Toyosu in 2018, Tsukiji's OUTER market is very much alive and thriving with ~400+ shops and stalls: sushi breakfasts, grilled seafood skewers, tamagoyaki (sweet omelette), fresh produce, matcha treats and Japanese knives. Far more walkable and street-food friendly than Toyosu, and reachable at a civilised hour.

Why children love it: Wandering and grazing on skewers, tamagoyaki-on-a-stick, strawberry mochi and other hand-held snacks; lively, colourful lanes.

Honest drawbacks: Busiest and freshest in the morning (many stalls wind down by early afternoon); crowded and narrow; follows the market calendar so quieter on Sundays/Wednesdays.
