Toyosu Market (Tuna Auction Viewing)
豊洲市場
Toyosu · near Shijo-mae Station (Yurikamome Line)
Tokyo's modern wholesale fish market, which replaced Tsukiji's inner market in 2018. Visitors can watch the famous pre-dawn tuna auction: a FREE upper glass-walled observation walkway opens at 5:00am with no booking needed, while a limited lower deck (closer, ground level) requires winning a monthly online lottery. The market buildings also hold sushi restaurants and a rooftop garden.
Why children love it: Seeing enormous frozen tuna auctioned off at dawn, then a super-fresh sushi or rice-bowl breakfast in the same complex.
Honest drawbacks: Extremely early start (be there ~5:00am) — tough with young kids; auction not held on market closed days; the free upper deck is behind glass and can be crowded; the close-up lower deck needs a lottery win.
