JR East's flagship railway museum and the successor to the old Akihabara Transportation Museum. Huge halls of real retired locomotives and Shinkansen cars, a large working model-railway diorama, and popular hands-on train-driving simulators.
Why children love it: Kids can sit in a real cab, try the driving simulators, ride a mini shinkansen in the outdoor area, and walk right up to dozens of full-size trains including old bullet trains.
Honest drawbacks: Popular simulators require same-day lottery/reservation and fill up; very busy on weekends and holidays; a little far from central Tokyo (allow ~50 min door to door).
