Tokyo's home of professional sumo. The Ryogoku Kokugikan arena hosts three of Japan's six annual Grand Sumo Tournaments (basho). Each tournament runs 15 consecutive days, starting on a Sunday. In Tokyo these fall ONLY in January, May and September — the other three basho are in Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Tickets range from cheap upper-tier arena seats to traditional box (masu) seats on the floor.
Why children love it: Ceremonial ring-entering rituals, salt-throwing, giant wrestlers and short explosive bouts hold kids' attention; the atmosphere is festive and snack-filled.
Honest drawbacks: Only runs on specific tournament dates (three ~2-week windows a year in Tokyo); good seats sell out fast; a full day is long for little kids — many families come for the afternoon top-division bouts only.
