Know before you go

Getting there
From Nagoya, take the JR Hida limited express (Wide View Hida) straight to Takayama Station in about 2 hours 20 minutes; from Tokyo, ride the Tokaido/Hokuriku Shinkansen to Nagoya (or to Toyama, then JR Hida south) and connect - roughly 4 to 4.5 hours total.
Getting around
The old town, morning market, Takayama Jinya and station are all within an easy 10-15 minute walk of each other; buses from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center reach Hida Folk Village (about 10 min) and Shirakawa-go (about 50 min).
Best time to visit
Spring (the April 14-15 Sanno Festival) and autumn (the October 9-10 Hachiman Festival) are the signature seasons for the famous festival floats; winter brings snow-blanketed thatched roofs, though some sights keep shorter or irregular hours.
With babies & toddlers
Distances are short and mostly flat, but the old town's narrow streets get crowded and cobbled, so a compact stroller or carrier plus timed rest stops for snacks work best.
Eating with kids
Kid-friendly local bites are everywhere: grilled Hida beef skewers and beef sushi, soft mitarashi dango (soy-glazed rice dumplings), Hida beef buns, and sweet sake-lees or fruit treats from the morning market stalls.
The mistake to avoid
Trying to do Takayama and Shirakawa-go in a single rushed day trip - the old town and morning markets reward a slow morning, so an overnight stay lets you enjoy the near-empty early-morning streets before the tour buses arrive.
