Jigokudani Monkey Park (snow monkeys)
3h · 5/5Yamanouchi · near Yudanaka + bus
Wild Japanese macaques that bathe in a natural hot spring — reached by a scenic 1.6km forest walk. Iconic in winter snow, and the monkeys live here year-round.
Know before you go
- Getting there
- Nagano is about 80 minutes from Tokyo on the Hokuriku Shinkansen — easy to slot between the city and the Alps. From Nagano Station, local trains and buses reach the snow-monkey park and Hakuba.
- Getting around
- Compact around the station. For the snow monkeys, allow 2.5–3 hours each way (train to Yudanaka, bus, then the forest walk). Zenko-ji temple is a short bus or walk from the station.
- Best time to visit
- Winter (roughly mid-December to March) for the classic snow-monkeys-in-snow scene; autumn for colour and easier walking. The monkeys live there year-round but mainly bathe when it’s cold.
- With babies & toddlers
- Best with primary-aged children and up because of the monkey-park walk; younger children need a carrier. Zenko-ji and the station area make a gentle add-on.
- With teenagers
- The snow monkeys are a genuinely memorable, photogenic outing for teens, and Nagano pairs naturally with a Hakuba ski leg.
- Eating with kids
- Nagano is known for soba, oyaki (stuffed dumplings) and apples; the station has plenty of simple, familiar options for a stopover meal.
- The mistake to avoid
- Treating the snow monkeys as a quick stop. It’s a half-day round trip with a real walk in — plan it as the day’s main event, not a bolt-on.
Practical family notes
- The snow-monkey park involves a ~30–40 minute walk on a forest path — check suitability for little legs and prams (prams not practical).
