Sapporo & Hokkaido with kids
Japan’s big northern island — the gateway to family ski resorts in winter and cool, green open space in summer.
Best: 2–3 nightsRegion: HokkaidoFamily rating: 4/5Good for: primary, teen
Why families come here
In winter it’s the launch point for Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro; in summer it’s farms, flowers and space to breathe. Easy wide streets suit prams.
Where to base yourself
Central Sapporo (Odori)
Flat, wide, easy to walk; good base before transferring to the snow.
Best for: first night, ski transfers
Know before you go
- Getting there
- Fly into New Chitose Airport (CTS) — direct or one-stop from Australia, or a short domestic hop from Tokyo. A fast JR train links the airport to central Sapporo in about 40 minutes; resort coaches leave directly from the airport.
- Getting around
- Sapporo itself has a simple subway and wide, flat, pram-friendly streets. Beyond the city, Hokkaido is big and best explored by rental car in the warmer months, or by resort transfer in winter.
- Best time to visit
- Two very different seasons: December–March for deep-powder skiing (peak January–February), and June–August for cool, green escapes — lavender farms, flowers and space to roam while the mainland swelters.
- With babies & toddlers
- Summer is gentle and uncrowded for little ones; winter is about the snow, so choose a resort with childcare and non-ski activities. Wide streets and space suit prams year-round.
- With teenagers
- Skiing and snowboarding in winter; in summer, farms, cycling, and the food scene (Sapporo ramen, seafood, dairy and the beer museum for the grown-ups) appeal to older kids.
- Eating with kids
- Hokkaido is a food highlight — fresh seafood, corn, dairy, soft-serve and hearty ramen. Portions and flavours are very kid-friendly.
- The mistake to avoid
- Underestimating winter transfer times. New Chitose to the ski villages can take 2–3 hours — book arrival flights that don’t leave you transferring late at night with tired children.
Practical family notes
- Most families use Sapporo/New Chitose Airport as the arrival and transfer point for Hokkaido ski resorts.
- Winter transfers to resorts can take 2–3 hours — plan arrival flights with young children in mind.
